Course Curriculum

1. Introduction
Welcome to Leadership & Team Development! Leadership and team development are essential for any organization seeking to improve its performance. Leaders play a vital role in setting the direction for their team and inspiring them to achieve common goals. There are many different leadership styles that can be effective, depending on the situation and the team being led. The most important thing is that the leader is able to adapt their style to fit the needs of their team and the task at hand. A good leader will also have a clear vision for where they want their team to go and what they hope to accomplish. Team development is also crucial for any organization looking to improve its performance. A strong team will be cohesive, with members who trust and respect one another. They will work well together towards common goals, and each member will contribute their unique skills and knowledge. Effective teams are typically characterized by high levels of communication, collaboration, and commitment. Both leadership and team development take time, effort, and patience. It is important to remember that these things do not happen overnight – it takes time for trust to be built, relationships to form, and skills to be developed. However, the payoff can be huge – an organization with strong leaders and an effective team can accomplish great things!

2. Leaders & Managers
Leaders inspire innovation and guide teams, fostering a positive work culture. Managers ensure smooth day-to-day operations and implement processes for specific objectives. The synergy between effective leadership and efficient management is vital for sustained growth in dynamic business environments.

3. Leadership Theories
Leadership theories are used to better understand and develop leadership styles, techniques, and approaches. Each of these theories has its own unique perspective on what makes a leader effective, and each has contributed to our current understanding of leadership.

4. Leadership Styles
A leadership style is a leader’s method of providing direction and motivating people. There is no one-size-fits-all leadership style for all organizations. However, having a basic understanding of various leadership styles enables successful executives to adopt the correct characteristics for themselves.

5. Types of Teams
Teams are a vital part of any successful organization. Different types of teams bring different strengths, weaknesses, and perspectives to the table. Understanding the unique characteristics of various team types can help leaders make informed decisions about their team structure.

6. Tuckman’s Group Stages
Bruce Tuckman’s four-stage model is one of the most influential models on team building. It suggests that the ideal group decision-making process should occur in four stages in order to enable a group to tackle problems, find solutions and deliver the best results.

7. Hackman’s Five-Factors-Model
J. Richard Hackman’s 2002 research at Harvard University focused on why some workgroups are successful while others are not. He was able to identify five crucial factors that can significantly increase the chances of success for teams.

8. Leadership Trends
The 21st century has seen a number of new leadership trends emerge. This is in part due to the changing nature of work and new technology, as well as the increasing importance of soft skills and well-being in the workplace. In this chapter, we will discuss some of the most notable new leadership trends.

9. Conclusion
As you have learned in this course, there is not a single, definitive style of leadership that is superior to all others. The most effective leaders are those who are able to adapt their style to the specific situation and group of people they are leading. For you as a manager, the most important aspect of your leadership is deciding how much freedom to give your team. Too much, and they may not achieve their targets, too little, and you will restrict their personal development and job satisfaction which can cause problems with motivation and productivity. The ability to be flexible and adjust your leadership style to the needs of the situation is what separates great leaders from good ones. It is your responsibility to determine which style or combination of styles best suits your personality, team, company, and industry. Throughout this course, we discussed different leadership theories, styles, and trends. Now that this course is coming to an end, we want to leave you with the words of some influential leaders. In 2018, Forbes editor Robert Reiss interviewed several business leaders and asked them about their leadership styles. While there are some similarities, you will notice that each leader has a slightly different perspective. Here is what they had to say: Michel Doukeris (CEO, Anheuser-Busch): “Inspire people to reach their full potential. Establish a clear vision and then empower the team to lead the company’s future growth.” Bo Jackson (CEO, Bo Jackson Signature Foods): “My personal philosophy on leadership is best described by the relationship between a coach and his players, it is not the job of the coach to put greatness into players, but rather getting the player to believe that greatness already exists inside of them.” Ron Nersesian (CEO, Keysight Technologies): “Leadership is all about courage. It’s the courage to take on a big challenge, to do what no one else will, to question the status quo, confront a difficult situation, and to not give up.” General David Petraeus (Chairman, KKR Global Institute): “I have always sought to adjust my leadership style to be one that will, individually, bring out the best in each of those who report directly to me and also bring out the best in the organization I am privileged to lead. Leaders need to work hard to understand what leadership style will enable each of the individuals who report to them to be all that they can be. Dawn Zier (CEO, Nutrisystem): “My core leadership philosophy? To embrace change. Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone and embrace change. It’s not initially instinctive, but you’d be amazed at the opportunities that open up when you do. It’s critical in today’s dynamic environment to be flexible and nimble and be willing to disrupt yourself.” John Seifert (CEO, The Ogilvy Group): “I lead by setting direction, motivating people around a set of principles, and stepping back to let them do their best work.” Margaret Keane (CEO, Synchrony): “The best leaders create a culture where everyone feels empowered, where diversity drives fresh thinking and innovation. Leaders must ensure the company stays grounded in those values – through thick and thin.” Thank you for taking this course and good luck with the quiz!
